The Centenary TT brought visitors from all over the world to Glen Maye for one of the best DOC TT gatherings for years, despite rather soggy conditions during the morning. We had them from...
An exquisite 907 arrived before the crowd... ...but it soon started to fill up. The car park soon began to resemble a sea of red.... ...but some old style paint jobs were also much in evidence... ...and we had the rare sight of not one, but two 750SS's, along with a couple of 750GT's from Germany.... ...and there were a couple of examples of how to resurrect a bent 916! 1980's 900SS wishes to meet younger model for fun and friendship. Of course, a black & gold classic will always stand out from the crowd. A b udding John McGuinness gets an early look at his potential race winner. A late comer was this beautifully restored single rescued from a barn...and a rather pretty Elefant. Awards time, and 900SS owner Keith Fothergill presented the Best Bevel award to Dietmar Herfort, from near Hanover, for his 1981 SS. The last of the kickstart models (suitably modded - see small pic) with a nickel frame, spoked wheels, battery under the seat hump and 42000km on the clock Spaggy did the honours for Steve Craven's SCR (actually a Baines Imola) using a 2001 900SSie motor, with a home made bigger tank. Back in Newcastle (NSW) Steve owns 20 bevels and a Paso. This was freighted from Oz for the TT. Top man, and winner of the Best Special award. Best Belt went to Steve Robins pristine 851. It was a tough decision with some tremendous bikes to be seen, but Steve's attention to detail on modded bits, and the paint and alloy you could eat your dinner off, got him the vote from the independent judging panel. One more thank you goes to all the foreign guests who turned up in droves. After the rather damp affair at Glen Maye, we moved on to Old Laxey for the BBQ on Tuesday. We did, however, have a bit of a problem as the pub had changed hands under accrimonious circumstances, and the new landlord didn't know we were coming. Hence no burgers. Oops. Still, at least the new landlord knows we'll be there next year. It didn't stop us all having a good time though. Lovely evening sunshine poured down on us... ...and we even had our own exclusive car park for the evening. Hailwood Reps seemed to be everywhere during the 2007 TT... ...and we had a couple more superb examples at Laxey. However, there were also shedloads of STs in 2, 3 and 4 valve variants. Two fine examples of Pantah based classic Cafe Racers, the green one bristling with modern bits.
But we were also lucky enough to have Trevor Nation give us a wave at Ramsey hairpin on the Classic Parade lap as he demo'd the 1978 Hailwood original. Cheers Trev! And remember, 2008 is the 30th anniversary of the Hailwood F1 win, so how many Reps will be there?
