This must be the best looked after and most pampered/serviced 996 ST4s in the UK. The paintwork is excellent, and this machine hardly shows any sign of being used.

The ST4s had the 996 engine fitted and it produced more power and torque than the 916 styled 996 – in fact easily enough grunt to keep up with an SPS or more modern machines. Marchesini wheels, Brembo brakes and Ohlin’s and Showa’s finest make one of those perform fantastically. It is a real Wolf in sheep’s clothing.

I bought my first Ducati in the early 1980’s and have had them ever since – I am Ducati enthusiast. I have had a few ST4s’s, and this is by far the nicest one. It seems nippier than the others and has been pampered – see the service history!  – the ideal when you are buying a Ducati.

It is fitted with carbon Quill exhausts that emit a lovely deep tone, enough to enjoy the sound, but not annoy your neighbours or Mr Plod. The baffles are removable and so have been removed. They come with the bike, should you wish to be extra quiet. These exhausts are £550 and the original factory exhausts also come with it.

A new pair Metzler Roadtec 01 SE tyres were fitted a few hundred miles ago; reviews rate these as the very best sport sport touring tyres and cost £360.

The chain and sprockets are excellent, with no lift off the rear sprocket.

I fitted a new battery this year and I have always kept the battery cables properly fettled to ensure this one bursts into life with enthusiasm.

I prefer riding with a bar end mirror, but the bike comes with the original factory yellow mirrors with tiny carbon end tips and new springs.

As you can see from the mileage of just 15k, I have not been using it very much. Since I bought it my rides have consisted of a couple of trips into Wales to ride the fine twisties. In recent years, I have only taken it out on quiet cool evenings for a relaxing scamper down empty roads. As I have not even done 500 miles in the last two years, it is time for it to have a new owner who can unleash a 996.

I have had a look at what these bikes have been selling for and you can buy one with no/or a dubious service history with c30+k miles for about £3k and take a big risk. Considering the low miles, service history and condition – I think my price is fair.

It has had full Ducati main dealer services almost every year (regardless of its low miles) until it reached almost 11,000 miles. It has done just 4,000 miles since its last main dealer service. Since then, it has had an interim service oil (Shell Advance), filter etc just 2,500 miles ago. I did this myself as I have been working on them for 40 years – something I feel quite capable of doing – my father was an aero engineer, so I was well trained! If I was keeping it, I would now be looking to change the belts and oil/filter etc. However, I have learned after 40 years of Ducati’ing that most Ducati enthusiasts either like to do their own servicing or like to use their own favoured mechanic/dealer and so I will leave the next service to you, and I have adjusted the price accordingly. It had oil/filter etc. just c.2k miles ago, so it is not in a desperate need for a service.

It comes with the Handbook, Dealer Guide and Original Service book and extended Service book to record all of its services! It comes with a V5 in my name, lots of paperwork right back to the Pre Delivery inspection paperwork, original sales brochures and period road tests.
